Overview

The Return Label Service (RLS) exposes operations to perform the following functions:

  • Eligibility check: Perform eligibility check for an order to confirm whether the order is eligible for a return label or not.
  • Tracking number generation: Generate tracking numbers for UPS and USPS.
  • Label generation: If the order is eligible for label generation, generate a label / image by calling the carrier and return the label / image back to the calling system. Multiple methods to generate a label are available, like Email the label to the customer, Post the label to the customer, display the label to the customer to print or order package pick up.
  • Retrieve tracking number transit scans: Each tracking number used will have transit scans associated with it. This data can be retrieved to update customers on their package location.

The above operations are exposed over HTTP. Clients post XML requests to the Return Label Service endpoint and receive XML responses.

Examples of typical requests and responses are provided later on this page.

Return Labels for USPS

By default the Return Label Service generates labels for UPS returns. An option is available for generating labels for US Postal Service (USPS) as an alternative return provider. USPS labels are supported only for a LabelType value of IG (Image Generation).

The RLS request message includes an optional field <ServiceProvider>, with two valid values, UPS and USPS. If this field is not included, UPS is the default service provider. To specify USPS return labels, include this line in your request: <ServiceProvider>USPS</ServiceProvider>

Setup required for USPS return labels

Contact Radial before you start using the Return Label Service for USPS returns. Radial must do some store-specific configuration to enable the processing of USPS return labels for your store. If you specify USPS for a return before Radial's setup is complete, your request message will prompt an error response, USPS return labels are not configured for store code ____.

Note that USPS provides return label files only in TIFF or PDF format. This is different from UPS, which provides return labels in GIF format. If you plan to use USPS return labels, be prepared to receive TIFF or PDF files.

Option to use your own USPS account

The default approach for USPS returns, which Radial recommends, is to use a Radial-owned account to handle the interface with USPS. However, if you already have your own USPS account for returns, Radial can work with your account to process return labels.

To use your own USPS account for returns, contact your Radial representative and work with Radial to complete their setup for your USPS account. Radial will need some data values for your account, including the MID, MerchantAccountCode, LabelDefinition, ImageType, and ServiceTypeCode.

Note: If you are setting up your own account, be aware that a USPS return account is tied to a single location to which returns will be addressed. The is different from UPS’s return account structure, which allows for multiple addresses in one account. If you plan to direct returns to more than one address, you will need to set up multiple return accounts with USPS. If you set up multiple return accounts, give Radial the information for each account.

Note: The old domain will still be in operation until further notice from Radial. For more information on Radial API URIs, see API Requests and Responses.

Label Types

To generate return labels, you must specify one of the following label types in the request.

Label Type Definition Description
NG Number Generation Generally used with Hassle-Free Returns. Generates a tracking number that is sent to the warehouse where the return labels are printed and shipped with the order.
IG Image Generation Generates a tracking number and label image that shoppers can print.
EL Email Generates an email to the shopper that contains a tracking number and label that the shopper can print

Note: The Return Label Service integrates with UPS to generate a Base64 encoded image for labels and provides flexible options to email/display labels so shoppers can print them.
